what this is all about

This page consists of hyperlinks to pages of other musicians, bands or simply to pages which looked interesting to us. In a sense, it's "our internet". In order to keep the resulting mess to a minimum, here's something like a TOC:

  1. the Jazz4Fun family
  2. Fun with Jazz in Germany
  3. Jazz4Fun and the big wide world
  4. Jazz4Beer: Jazz in Munich's bars

the Jazz4Fun family

Those who read our FAQ page know it already, here we repeat it for the uninformed: Jazz4Fun as a band's name is about as useful as being Mr. Li in China or Herr Müller in Germany. But unlike Mr. Li and Herr Müller we know and like all our relatives and therefore reveal their addresses here:
bulletBig Band Jazz for Fun from Schwalmstadt/Treysa in Hessen
bulletThe Hauni Freizeitgruppe Jazz for Fun from the Hamburg area gave rebirth to their Internet website
bulletJAZZ 4 FUN from the Aschaffenburg/Würzburg area was only present for a short while
bulletProfessionally made, even with a domain name appears Regina Büchner's Jazz4Fun. And the music sounds good, too. Well, the name obliges ...
bulletThey are a few more than just four, but the Orchestra of the municipal music school of Mannheim has also chosen Jazz4Fun as it's name.
bulletThe name Jazz'd for Fun was chosen by the Big Band of the Sing- and Music school of Kempten. Statistics show Big Bands now at even with Quartets at 3 : 3.
bulletQuartets watch out! The big bands are ahead. Jazz for Fun from Erftstadt scored with the domain name jazzforfun.de
bulletWhat's that: it is neither a quartet, nor a big band, but still is called JAZZ FOR FUN? It's our youngster, a septet from Vechta in Niedersachsen.
bulletFar away in Sweden, our colleagues also have some difficulties with the '4' in their name. The pictures on the hemsida of Jazz4fun clearly show a trio at work.
bulletThe Big Bands stabilize their lead, the culprit being Jazz4Fun of the Hofenfels Gymnasium in Zweibrücken.

Will the quartets strike back? Are there more septets? Follow this exciting match - exclusively at Jazz4Fun, the Dixieland Jazz Quartet from Munich.

Fun with Jazz in Germany

Apart from our namesakes there are plenty of other bands and musicians who populate the internet, play similar music and who have something in common with us.
bulletThe Charivari Jazzband was founded by Jazz4Fun trumpeter Christian and meanwhile also includes banjoist Gerhard. Now available in English, too.
bulletPowerKraut not only is a beautiful name (and more rare than Li) but first of all it is the band of Dieter Grosche from Düsseldorf. Dieter is a multi-talent. He is a master of the trombone but also a master of ceremonies who knows about 1000 jokes. Gerhard and Christian met Dieter on the Danish island of Bornholm.
bulletThe United Syncopators from Munich play a considerably more archaic jazz than Jazz4Fun. We all enjoy listening to their music and substituting or sitting in with them.
bulletThe Dark Down Stompers from Munich's suburb of Pasing are what has been termed a Territory Band in America's 20ies: totally unknown to the vast majority but extremly well accepted by the few locals who know them.
bulletOn his homepage, as fresh and inspired as his trumpet playing, Michael Etzel presents his Hot Lips.
bulletA dear old friend, Klaus Weinhardt from Saalbach, today plays trumpet with the Jazz-Optimisten from Sonneberg.
bullet"Dixieland is played by bearded, bald, fat, retired old men". Now we can fundamentally reject this infamous statement, thanks to the Jazz Alligators from Hamburg.
bulletThe Royal Dixie Stompers come from Bavaria'a most important area, where asparagus, hops and malt are grown.
bulletWith their name Joe&Jazzer this "unplugged quartet for old-time jazz and funny songs" didn't qualify for the "relatives" category, but with Harry Thurm on clarinet they clearly belong to the "friends" department.
bulletTheJazzPages is a very comprehensive and well designed site on jazz in Germany covering concert schedules, festivals, PR agents, and many more. Also available in English.
bulletThere's New Orleans Jazz, Bigband Jazz, Modern Jazz and now there's also Bayernjazz. But don't be fooled, this is a very informative site about jazz in Bavaria.

Jazz4Fun and the big wide world

Christian is a cool fellow. With the first page of Jazz4Fun hardly on the internet he Emailed some American bands whose pages he found on the net. And he was successful. Americans take it as easy as he does. So you'll not only find Jazz4Fun on American pages but also bands from all over the world on our pages. As a consequence we had to translate our text into English. At least we thought it was English until Mike Evans of the Toll House Jazz Band had mercy and sent us his version. Have a beer on us Mike!
bulletMike Johnson was the first to exchange links with us. He's the father of Washboard International and he plays a mean and clean washboard. He also looks after the home pages of a number of American bands. Mike maintains one of the most complete link lists of the international dixieland scene.
bulletAlmost as comprehensive as Mike's list is Karen Quick's list of dixieland bands which references dixieland bands all over the world, among them famed quartets :-)
bulletOur (of course electronic) correspondence with the Toll House Jazz Band of Columbus, Ohio led to an invitation for this band to join Christian's Charivari Jazzband on their 18th anniversary in Unterbrunn, near Munich. It was a tremendous success. They played to an enthousiastic crowd in a packed Gasthaus Böck. But this was not all. Read more!
bulletBorn in Unterbrunn, Bavaria, the CanAmGer Jazzband meanwhile has grown to a multinational, global enterprise.
bulletAppropriately, England is represented by a real British club. The Clevedon Jazz Club was the first on the island to go on the internet as webmaster Trevor Tomasin proudly states.
bulletBavaria, USA, England, isn't there something missing? You're right, Australia's missing! O.T.T. Chicago Swing, a professionals' trio from Perth in West Australia apparently became aware of that and spontaneously placed us in their list of international bands. And you folks down under sure got a fair dinkum homepage. Av-a-go mate!
bulletBernhard Kanduth from Austria really cares for teachers. On his search machine music seek you may rate web sites.

We're pleading for a mild sentence:

Jazz4Beer

Luckily there still are people who can imagine better things than chasing musicians on the internet. Therefore we want to tell you where to find real non-cyber musicians in and around Munich.
bulletIn the basement of the Unionsbräu, Einsteinstr. 42, there's Jazz several times a week. Mostly it's old-time style.
bulletThe Unterfahrt is the place for the more modern oriented ones. They also head for Einsteinstr. 42. Apparently you can't go wrong with this address.
bulletJazz bei Fritz was the name of a bar, run by "Bully" Stevens, featured trombonist of the Allotria jazz band. Later it became the Jazzladen, currently it's Gerry's Swingland. You'll still find it in the basement of the Hofbräukeller at Wiener Platz.
bulletFor quite a while they only offered 'canned' music. At least on Monday they're back on life music at the Schwabinger Podium at Wagnerstraße.
bulletAt the Brunnwart, every second and fourth Thursday of the month, the Jazzkränzchen Immergrün performs sophisticated arrangemens of all the beautiful dixieland evergreens. Visit them at Biedersteiner Straße 78.
bulletIn the Wirtshaus zum Isartal at Brudermühlstraße the world famous (no joke!) Veterinary Street Jazz Band appears every Thursday.
bulletonce a month on Saturday, the Charivari Jazzband of Jazz4Fun's trumpet virtuoso Christian plays at Gasthaus Böck in Unterbrunn, near Munich.
bulletEvery Sunday at 12 noon there's a dixie brunch at the Wirtshaus in der Au.
bulletThe St. Ursula recently closed. The Jazzwerke München moved a few blocks further to the Rolandseck. Hopefully this will not affect Helmut Hertel's famous announcements.
bulletStill not enough? You want to see today's programme? Visit Jazz Zeitung! BTW: you don't have to stare at the monitor - subscribe to it.
bulletThe official home page of the city of München features a short and incomplete list of Jazz bars.
bulletA decent list is available from the Jazz Institute.
